Author Guidelines

Manuscript Categories
The Pharmacy Review goals are to cultivate creativity, critical thought, and leadership in future generations of pharmacists for the purposes of optimizing patient care.  We invite your original articles from the backgrounds of the sciences or the humanities as they regard the practice and pedagogy of pharmacy.  The Review seeks articles germane to both the humanistic experiences and decision-making processes of pharmacotherapy in the rapidly changing environment of health care in America.  Stories of student interventions while on rotation, case studies, art and book reviews, editorials, traditional reviews and research articles from health care professionals, as well as, original photographs/art/poetry/cartoons from pharmacists and pharmacy students are welcomed.

Style Guidelines
Authors should refer to the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style, 10th Edition for additional guidance. Below are a few key points from the text to remember before submitting an article to the UIW Pharmacy Review.

  • Unfamiliar terms and acronyms should be defined at first mention.
  • Manuscripts that were prepared for oral presentation must be rewritten for print.
  • Word Style:  Foreign words, not in general use, should be italicized.
  • For proper use of chemical and biochemical terms, mathematical equations, mathematical expressions, special symbols, subscripts, superscripts, or Greek letters, please refer to the AMA Manual of Style.
  • Abbreviations:  The use of an abbreviation is suggested when a cumbersome term appears repeatedly in the text. After the first usage of the term, place the abbreviation in parentheses after the term.  Thereafter, you may refer to the abbreviation alone. Refer to the AMA Manual of Style for additional rules regarding abbreviations.
  • References:  Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references and for correct citation of references. Number references appearing within the article consecutively in the order in which they are cited. If a reference is used more than once in an article, use the original reference number in each subsequent citation. No unpublished data may be cited as a numbered reference. References in text, legends and tables should be denoted with Arabic numeral superscripts. Superscript numbers appear outside commas and periods, and inside colons and semicolons. References should be listed at the end of the article; footnotes are not permitted.  Journal names should be abbreviated according to the journal list in PubMed.  For additional information regarding citation of references, please refer to the AMA Manual of Style.

Manuscript Organization

Manuscript File Formats:  For submission and review, please submit your article as a word processing file (e.g. MS Word) Word document. Do not submit your manuscript in PDF format.
When submitting a document, the document should be arranged in the following order:  title page, abstract, text, references, tables, figures, and appendices.

Title Page:  The following information should be included within the title page:  title, name of each author with their terminal degree, academic/professional title, affiliation, and the city and state where he/she is located at the time of submission.  The title page should also include 3-5 keywords for the purpose of performing a search.

Abstract:  The following sections should be included within the abstract: Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.  Each section should be concise, flushed left, and the abstract should not exceed 300 words.

Tables and Figures

Tables:  Tables should be placed within the corresponding text of the document.  Each table should be numbered in the order in which it appears in the text.  Each table should contain the following information: title, units of measure, footnotes, table number, and an explanation of all abbreviations.

Figures:  Figures should be of high quality and appropriate for professional publication.  All figures should include:  title, figure number corresponding to the order in which it appears in the text, and a caption.  The caption should contain any information necessary for understanding the figure. The minimum font size for figures, lettering, and numbering is 10 pt in order for the information to be legible when reduced.

Main Body of Text
Headings within the main text are preferred.  Primary headings should be bold while secondary headings are in regular font and placed immediately above the paragraph.  Tertiary headings should be italicized.  Follow the tertiary heading with a period and place just before the first sentence of the paragraph.

Acknowledgments:  The acknowledgments section should be placed at the end of the document.  The acknowledgement section should include both financial contributions as well as recognize persons who assisted with the production of the document.  Any liability concerns may be addressed within this section.

Conflict of interest statement:  All conflicts of interest must be reported by the author.  In the event that there are no conflicts of interest, the author should also indicate this information.

Submission Process/Timeline
After submitting your article, you will receive a confirmation of its receipt within 48 hours.  You will receive a provisional acceptance or a denial within 10 days of receipt of the submission.

Peer Review Stage: All original articles are sent for content review. Once the reviewers provide feedback, the author has at least 2 weeks to respond with comments and changes.

Editing and Copyediting Stage:  Prior to publication, all manuscripts are copyedited for organization, style, and clarity.  Authors may be asked at this stage to reorganize a manuscript or shorten the text.

Proofing Stage:  Authors will receive an e-mail with a PDF proof for review approximately 10 days prior to publication. Authors may send an e-mail with an annotated PDF (corrections entered using Adobe Acrobat software) attached, or they may print out the proof, mark corrections on the copy, and fax only those pages with corrections to the Pharmacy Review office (fax: 210-822-1516).  Include in your fax a cover letter addressed to Dr. Eli Phillips. The Pharmacy Review allows authors 2 business days to return proofs.
